Fact-Check: EES Launch Won’t Force British Holidaymakers to Buy Travel Insurance
Reports claiming that British nationals will have to show proof of medical insurance when travelling to Europe later this year have been debunked.
It has been reported that Reform UK leader Nigel Farage claimed that proving medical cover would be a “very lengthy process” for UK visitors once the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) launches on 12 October. However, the European Commission has confirmed that this is false.
The rollout of the EES will not change existing entry rules for British travellers. As has been the case since Brexit, UK visitors to the EU and wider Schengen area must only:
- State the purpose of their stay (tourism, business, family visit, etc.)
- Show evidence of sufficient funds and/or booked accommodation
- Present a return or onward travel ticket
Contrary to the reports, travel insurance will not be a mandatory requirement for British holidaymakers.
This news comes as a relief to many older travellers or those with pre-existing medical conditions, who often face steep premiums and instead rely on the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). The GHIC entitles UK citizens to medical treatment in the EU and Switzerland on the same terms as local residents.
From 12 October, the only new process introduced under the EES will be biometric checks, such as fingerprints and facial scans, for British visitors entering or leaving the Schengen area.
The claim about compulsory travel insurance remains unexplained. No EU directives or regulations on the EES mention such a condition.
The European Union is simply applying the post-Brexit rules agreed by the UK government under Boris Johnson’s “oven-ready” deal, which places British nationals in the category of “third-country nationals.”
In short, while the Entry/Exit System will introduce biometric checks from October, British travellers will not face new demands for proof of travel insurance.
