Stricter EU Border Rules for British Travellers Start This October
From 12 October, British citizens travelling to the EU will face new entry requirements under the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES).
UK passengers will need to:
- Provide biometric data – fingerprints and a facial scan – at self-service kiosks in airports, ports, and train stations.
- Be ready to show proof of travel insurance, proof of accommodation, a return or onward ticket, and evidence of sufficient funds for their trip.
These rules will apply to all non-EU citizens and will replace passport stamps. Anyone who refuses to give their biometric data will be denied entry.
The process will be mostly automated through kiosks, but travellers who answer “no” to certain questions may be referred to a border officer for more checks.
Once registered, your biometric record will be valid for three years, meaning you won’t have to scan again until it expires.
The EES rollout will take place over six months and be fully in place by April 2026. The UK government has warned that travellers should expect possible longer waits during busy times.
From 2026, the EU will also introduce ETIAS, a new travel authorisation system. UK citizens will need to apply online, provide personal details, answer questions about their trip, and pay a €20 fee before visiting the Schengen Area.
Post-Brexit rules still limit British nationals without EU residency or work rights to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen Zone.
The EU says these changes are designed to improve border security and cut down on illegal migration.
