EU Green Travel Plans Predicted To Discourage Millions of Tourists From Visiting Spain

Making commercial aviation greener comes at a price.

The European Union plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent before 2030 could discourage tourists from visiting Spain which will result in losing millions of tourists in the upcoming year.

According to a report from Deloitte, environmental measures introduced can affect ticket taxes and sustainable aviation, such as biofuels, could be responsible for 11 million fewer international tourists to Spain.

Spain is a beautiful country to visit and it has been one of the favourite destinations in the EU for decades. This European country is heavily dependent on tourism, and these measures could cost billions in revenues generated by tourism as well as 430,000 jobs in the industry.

Reducing Emissions From Aviation Industry

The EU plans to cut its carbon emissions, especially by reducing the aviation industry’s impact on the environment.

The measures established by the European Commission under the Fit for 55 plan include a quota for the use of sustainable aviation fuels set at 5 percent, tightening caps on carbon emissions, and higher taxes on aviation fuel and tickets.

The report concludes that the introduction of these measures by 2030 would result in travel to Spain becoming more expensive. The higher costs could end up discouraging tourists from visiting the country.

Though the plan may seem as if they come at a high price, they are necessary to achieve net zero and combat the climate crisis. More expensive air travel may mean fewer holidays abroad but it's a small price to pay for a healthier Earth for future generations.
