Isle of Man to Require Digital Travel Permit by Late 2025

Visitors to the Isle of Man from outside the Common Travel Area (CTA) will soon need a digital travel permit, as the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system is set to launch by late 2025.

The ETA will apply to non-British and non-Irish citizens who do not require a visa to enter the island, mirroring the UK’s recently introduced system, which mandates travelers obtain an ETA before arrival.

The CTA is a border-free travel zone comprising the UK, Ireland, and the Crown Dependencies—Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man.

Treasury Minister Alex Allinson called the £10 permit a “pivotal step” in keeping the island a secure and welcoming place to live, work, and visit.

According to the UK Home Office, ETAs which is valid for two years and permitting multiple stays of up to six months will enhance security and simplify immigration procedures. The UK introduced its ETA scheme in January for travellers from non-European Union (EU) countries, including the US, Canada and Australia, with EU nationals set to follow from April 2.

The digital permit is linked to a traveller's passport and can be applied for online.

Legislative Approval

During a recent Tynwald session, Minister Allinson proposed extending the UK’s Nationality and Borders Act to the Isle of Man to facilitate the introduction of the ETA system.

The act, passed in the UK in 2022, includes various immigration provisions, such as offshore asylum processing and penalties for illegal entry.

However, Lawrie Hooper, Leader of the Liberal Vannin Party, opposed granting “blanket permission” for all provisions, advocating instead for an amendment that would only allow for the ETA's implementation. Lawmakers backed the amended proposal, confirming that the permit requirement will take effect for travellers outside the CTA from late 2025.

The Isle of Man's ETA system will be administered by the UK.
