Are you a British citizen?

People born in the UK before 1983

If you were born in the UK before 1983 you are a British citizen.

People born outside the UK before 1983

If you were born outside the UK before 1983 and your father was either born in the UK or registered/naturalised as a British citizen before you were born, and your parents are, or subsequently married, you are a British citizen.

* Before 1983, a mother could not pass on her British citizenship, however, she can now apply to have her child registered as a British citizen whilst they are a child and you may do so as an adult.

People born in the UK after 1982

If you were born in the UK after 1982 and, at the time of your birth, either of your parents was a British citizen or a settled in the UK, you are a British citizen.

People born outside the UK after 1982

If you were born outside the UK after 1982 and, before your birth, either of your parents was a British citizen by birth in the UK or having been registered or naturalised as a British citizen in the UK, you are a British citizen.

Subsequent generations

If you are a child born outside the UK, either of your parents is a British citizen by decent and either of that parent’s parents is, or was, a British citizen otherwise than by decent. And if your parents have lived in the UK for a continuous three year period, whether before your birth or after, you will be able to apply to be registered as a British citizen.
