UK Airports Hit By System Failure: Passengers Urged to Check Flights

Travellers across the UK are being urged to double-check their flight status after a radar system failure at the UK’s air traffic control provider, NATS, caused widespread disruption at all major airports on July 30.

Although NATS reported the issue was resolved within an hour by switching to a backup system, the knock-on effects have been severe, with over 150 flights cancelled and thousands more delayed or grounded.

Travel experts are warning that the disruption may last for days as airlines work to reposition aircraft and crews amid the peak summer travel season.

The fault led to a temporary reduction in flight traffic to ensure safety. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed the disruption was not due to a cyberattack or malicious activity and described the event as “isolated.”

Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Manchester airports have resumed normal or near-normal operations. However, some cancellations and delays are still occurring, especially for flights affected by aircraft and crew being out of position. Airlines, including Ryanair and EasyJet have resumed most services but are still dealing with the aftermath.

What Should Travellers Do?

1. Check your flight status
Before heading to the airport, visit your airline’s website or app to confirm your flight is operating as scheduled.

2. Know your rights
Under UK law, airlines must:

  • Provide meals, refreshments, and accommodation if your flight is significantly delayed or cancelled.
  • Offer an alternative flight to your destination at no extra cost, even with another airline if necessary.

3. Compensation eligibility
While airlines must look after passengers, you may not be entitled to financial compensation if the delay was due to “extraordinary circumstances” like an air traffic control failure.

4. Keep all receipts
If you had to pay out of pocket for hotels or meals, keep receipts, you may be able to claim reimbursement later from the airline.

While operations are improving, the aviation industry warns passengers to expect some lingering disruption into the weekend.
