Portugal Braces for Major Travel Disruption on 11 December
Travellers heading to or from Portugal on 11 December 2025 should prepare for severe travel disruption, as a nationwide general strike is expected to cause widespread flight cancellations, delays, and public transport shutdowns.
The strike, led by the Portuguese National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel (SNPVAC), will heavily impact operations at Lisbon, Porto, Faro, and Azores airports. Airlines, including TAP Air Portugal and Azores Airlines are expected to cancel the majority of their services, leaving many passengers stranded or forced to rebook.
What Travellers Can Expect
- Grounded flights and long delays across all major Portuguese airports
- Limited or no public transport, affecting trains, buses, and metro lines
- Crowded terminals as passengers attempt to rebook or adjust plans
- Reduced services in the public sector, creating additional complications for holiday travellers
- Knock-on disruption to international connections, especially for those flying via Portugal to the Americas or Africa
With the strike taking place during the peak holiday season, travellers visiting family or returning home may face major setbacks.
Airlines Likely to Be Most Affected
- TAP Air Portugal – expected to cancel most flights; rebooking and refund waivers available
- Azores Airlines – urging passengers to verify flight details early
- Other carriers operating in Portugal may also adjust schedules
Both airlines are notifying customers directly and encouraging them to monitor their booking portals and email alerts.

- Check your flight status frequently — cancellations may be announced with short notice
- Arrive early, as airport queues are expected to be longer than usual
- Contact your airline for rebooking or refund options
- Consider travel insurance if you have onward connections
- Have a backup plan, especially if travelling between Portuguese cities where local transport may be suspended

The strike will also affect rail services, buses, metro lines, schools, ports, and public offices, making it harder for tourists and residents to move around the country.
