Romania Set to Join U.S. Visa Waiver Program in 2025
Exciting news for Romanians, starting in March or April 2025, Romanians will no longer need a visa to visit the United States.
Romania’s ambassador to the US, Andrei Muraru, confirmed this major development during a recent interview, announcing that Romania is set to join the US Visa Waiver Program.
Once part of the program, Romanians can travel to the US visa-free for up to 90 days.
Whether for tourism, business, or simply exploring the country’s iconic landmarks, from New York City to the Grand Canyon, this is a significant step toward easier travel. Beyond leisure, this move could also open new opportunities for Romanian professionals to explore short-term employment or business ventures across all 50 states.
The Road to Visa-Free Travel
Romania has been working toward joining the US Visa Waiver Program for years, and the journey has not been without its challenges. One of the key requirements was achieving a visa rejection rate of less than three percent. In October 2023, Ambassador Muraru announced that Romania finally met this threshold, bringing the country closer to its long-awaited goal.
In 2023 alone, US authorities issued 60,000 visas to Romanian applicants, but with an eight percent rejection rate, the country was still short of the eligibility criteria. However, a successful push to reduce this number in recent months has allowed Romania to hit the mark and move forward.
What’s Next?
According to Muraru, the Romanian government is expected to make an official announcement in January 2025. Afterward, US officials will prepare a report, which will be reviewed by both the Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security. Congress will then be notified, but no vote is required for Romania’s inclusion in the program.
This long-awaited milestone will mark a new chapter in US-Romanian relations, making it easier than ever for Romanians to visit the US and strengthening cultural, business, and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
