EU Continues Development of Future Digital Schengen Visa System

The European Union is continuing its efforts to modernise the Schengen visa process through the development of a fully digital application system and future digital visas. The initiative aims to simplify travel procedures, improve security, and create a more efficient experience for visa applicants.

The long-term goal is to replace traditional visa stickers with secure digital visas while allowing travellers to complete most application steps online. These changes form part of the EU’s broader strategy to modernise border management and immigration systems.

How the Future Digital Schengen Visa System Will Work

Under the new framework, travellers will eventually be able to submit visa applications through a common EU online platform. Applicants will be able to upload documents, pay fees electronically, receive updates, and access visa information in one place.

Most applicants are expected to complete much of the process online, reducing the need for repeated visits to consulates or visa centres. In-person appointments will generally be limited to first-time applicants or those who need to provide updated biometric information.

What This Means for Travellers

The future digital visa system is designed to reduce paperwork, improve processing efficiency, and strengthen protection against fraud and counterfeit documents. The introduction of secure digital visas is also expected to make it easier for authorities to verify travel authorisations.

The project forms part of a wider digital border strategy that includes systems such as EES and the upcoming ETIAS programme. While existing visa procedures remain in place for now, travellers can expect Schengen visa applications to become increasingly digital in the years ahead.
