UK Updates Travel Advice for Switzerland as New Schengen Biometric Border System Approaches
Travellers from the United Kingdom planning a trip to Switzerland may soon notice changes at border control. The UK government has recently updated its travel advice as Europe prepares to introduce a new biometric border system across the Schengen travel area.
The system, known as the Entry/Exit System (EES), will change how travellers from outside the European Union enter and leave many European countries. Instead of stamping passports manually, border officers will record biometric information such as fingerprints and facial images.
As the launch of the new system gets closer, travellers are being advised to understand the changes and prepare for possible delays at border checkpoints.
UK Issues Updated Guidance for Switzerland
The travel update was issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which provides official travel advice for UK citizens.
According to the updated guidance, travellers visiting Switzerland may soon experience stricter border procedures once the new biometric system becomes fully operational.
This does not mean travel restrictions are being introduced. Instead, it means the entry process may include additional steps such as biometric registration when entering the country.
Travellers are encouraged to check travel updates before their trip and allow extra time when passing through immigration, especially during the early stages of the system’s rollout.
What Is the Schengen Entry/Exit System?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new automated system designed to improve border security across the Schengen Area.
Once launched, the system will digitally record when travellers enter and leave Schengen countries. Instead of receiving a passport stamp, travellers’ details will be stored in a shared database.
During their first visit after the system launches, travellers may need to:
- Scan their passport
- Provide fingerprint scans
- Have a facial photo taken
The system will help authorities track visitor stays and ensure travellers follow the 90-day stay limit within a 180-day period for visa-free travel.
Why Switzerland Is Included
Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, but it is part of the Schengen travel area. Because of this, the country must follow the same border rules as other Schengen countries.
To prepare for the new system, Switzerland has been upgrading border control infrastructure at major airports such as Zurich Airport and Geneva Airport.
These airports are installing biometric kiosks and automated passport scanning systems to make the registration process faster and more efficient for travellers.
Other European Countries Preparing for the Changes

How the New System May Affect Travellers
For most travellers, the biggest change will be the biometric registration during their first visit after the system launches.
This process may take a few minutes and could lead to slightly longer waiting times at immigration checkpoints, especially at busy airports.
However, once travellers are registered in the system, future trips may be quicker because their information will already be stored.
Airports across Europe are currently testing the technology to reduce delays once the system officially launches.
Another Upcoming Travel Requirement
In addition to the new border system, Europe is also planning to introduce the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).
This program will require travellers from visa-free countries, including the UK, to apply online for travel authorization before visiting the Schengen area.
The process will be simple and similar to travel authorization systems used in countries like the United States.
The UK’s updated travel advice for Switzerland reflects the wider changes taking place across Europe’s border systems. As the Entry/Exit System (EES) moves closer to launch, travellers should expect some new procedures when entering the Schengen Area.
