Portugal Travel Advice Updated by UK Foreign Office: Latest Rules and Entry Requirements
Planning a trip to Portugal in 2026? The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice, and British travellers should pay close attention before heading to Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira, or the Azores.
The latest update focuses on Portugal’s entry requirements, passport validity, and the rollout of the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which will affect how UK travellers enter the Schengen Area.
Can UK Citizens Travel to Portugal Without a Visa?
Yes. British passport holders can still travel to Portugal visa-free for short stays.
Portugal is part of the Schengen Area, which means UK travellers can stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without needing a visa. This applies if you are travelling for:
- Holidays and tourism
- Visiting family or friends
- Business meetings
- Cultural or sporting events
- Short-term study or training
If you plan to work in Portugal, different immigration rules apply and a work visa may be required.
Important 90/180 Day Rule Explained
The 90-day rule applies across the entire Schengen Area, meaning time spent in countries like Spain, France, or Italy also counts toward your total limit; overstaying can lead to fines, entry bans of up to 3 years, or refusal at the border, so travellers should carefully track their days before planning longer trips in Europe.

New EU Entry/Exit System (EES): What Has Changed?
This is the biggest update from the Foreign Office.
The European Union is implementing the new Entry/Exit System (EES) across the Schengen Area, including Portugal.
This replaces manual passport stamping with a biometric registration system.
On your first visit after rollout, you may be asked to provide:
- Fingerprints
- A facial photo
- Passport verification
This may happen at a dedicated registration booth before reaching border control.
Children aged 11 and under will not have fingerprints taken, but they may still need a photo.
Will EES Cause Delays at Airports?
Yes, the EES may cause longer wait times at airports and borders, especially during busy periods, so travellers should arrive early, allow extra time for checks, and follow staff instructions, though no pre-registration or fee is required.
Passport Validity Rules for Portugal
Your passport must meet Schengen entry rules.
For UK travellers visiting Portugal, your passport must:
- Be less than 10 years old on the date of entry
- Have at least 3 months validity remaining after your planned departure date
If your passport does not meet these rules, you may be refused boarding or entry.
What Border Officials May Ask For
At Portuguese border control, officials may ask for proof of return or onward travel, evidence of sufficient funds, and accommodation details, so even without a visa, travellers should carry supporting documents when entering the country.
Future ETIAS System: Another Rule Coming
In addition to EES, the EU is expected to introduce ETIAS, a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, which will likely require an online application, a small fee, and security checks before departure, so travellers should monitor updates and check official UK Foreign Office advice before travelling.
