EU Commission Proposes Advancing Visa Facilitation for Türkiye

The European Commission has presented a proposal to further streamline Schengen visa procedures for Türkiye.

In a comprehensive report addressing the political, economic, and trade ties between the European Union and Türkiye, its emphasis is on the pivotal role of visa facilitation in fostering increased interactions between their people.

Highlighting the necessity of finding common ground with Türkiye, Olivér Várhelyi, the Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlightenment, stressed the urgent need for a constructive approach to support the proposed measures.

Commissioner Várhelyi underscored the priority of advocating for streamlined visa application processes, particularly for professionals and students, aiming to facilitate smoother access.

Additionally, Várhelyi emphasised the proposal for granting Turkish nationals multiple-entry visas with extended validity, foreseeing enhanced collaboration between the EU and Türkiye.

Beyond the visa matter, the Commission's report accentuates the significance of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, encouraging deeper collaboration between the EU and Türkiye across various domains, including migration, trade, investments, connectivity, and the green and digital transitions.

Türkiye has consistently pushed for relaxed Schengen visa regulations for its citizens.

As an official candidate for EU membership for the past 24 years, Türkiye's negotiations with the EU have encountered roadblocks due to disagreements, with the country yet to meet an additional six criteria.
