Green Travel: High-Speed Train From Paris To Madrid
Over the last decade and before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, air travel in Europe expanded at a much faster pace than rail travel.
Airline travel took off due to the rise of low-cost carriers and the popularity of leisure trips. This has essentially widened the gap between air and rail transport.
As the world faces up to climate change, short-haul flights look increasingly unattractive to many travellers. Given passengers’ increasing demand for greener transport solutions and the nature of European flights which are mostly short and medium-distance, there is still so much potential for rail travel.
A new high-speed train could launch between Paris and Madrid by the end of 2024. The service will be run by Italy's national state-owned railway, Trenitalia which is a subsidiary of FS Italiane Group.
The operator plans to connect the two cities with its high-speed Frecciarossa trains, which since December 2021 run between Paris and Milan, and Lyon and Paris, and since November 2022 between Barcelona, Zaragoza and Madrid.
Revival Of Rail In Europe
Rail travel is experiencing a revival in Europe as new high-speed and sleeper trains launch across the continent, making travel cheaper, faster, and more sustainable.
Czech Railways recently announced it will be reintroducing its former sleeper service between Prague and Zurich via Dresden, Leipzig, Frankfurt, and Basel.
Austrian train operator Nightjet also recently unveiled plans for a new service running between Stuttgart in Germany and Venice, Vienna, Budapest, Ljubljana, and Zagreb.
