Travellers heading through Belgium this week should brace for major disruptions, as a national strike is set to bring Brussels Airport to a standstill.
Due to the national strike, Skeyes, Belgium's air navigation service provider, has notified Brussels Airport that no air traffic will be permitted for 24 hours, from 10:00 PM on February 12 to 10:00 PM on February 13. Additionally, ground handlers and security personnel at the airport are expected to participate in the walkout, further impacting operations.
Trade unions across Belgium are staging a large-scale national protest against the government’s new policies. The strike is expected to cause significant chaos across multiple sectors, including public transport and aviation.
Brussels Airport, located in Zaventem, had already warned of disruptions due to security staff and ground-handling agents joining the strike. However, on February 10, officials confirmed a full halt to all departing passenger flights.
“To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, we have decided, in consultation with the airlines, not to operate any departing passenger flights on 13 February.”
