Denmark Increases Citizenship Application Fees

Applying for Danish citizenship just got more expensive.
As of June 18, the application fee has gone up by 50%, following a government decision to better reflect the administrative costs involved in processing applications.
The fee has risen from €536 (DKK 4,000) to €804 (DKK 6,000), according to Denmark’s Ministry of Immigration and Integration. The change was announced in a press release, with the Minister, Kaare Dybvad Bek, explaining that the increase is meant to cover the extensive process involved in handling each application.
“It makes sense to raise the fee. The cost should reflect the actual work the state puts into processing these applications.”
In addition to the higher base fee, a new charge has been introduced for repeat applicants. Starting with a person’s second reapplication, a fee of €402 (DKK 3,000) will now apply. Those reapplying for the first time are not required to pay this new fee.
However, there’s no fee increase for young people who were born or raised in Denmark. They will continue to pay the original €536 (DKK 4,000) fee. The Ministry said this exemption reflects Denmark’s international commitments toward individuals who have grown up in the country.
The price hikes were agreed upon by several political parties earlier this year and took effect from June 18, 2025. Although the new law was officially adopted on May 1, the digital systems needed to implement the change were only recently put in place.
Currently, Danish citizenship is granted twice a year through a bill passed by the Danish Parliament listing the names of successful applicants. But in 2025, citizenship will only be granted once—in the spring—due to Denmark’s preparations to take over the EU Council presidency later that year.
A new bill could be introduced in early 2026, possibly easing the process for applicants affected by the reduced opportunities in 2025.
