Slovenia Extends Internal Border Controls With Croatia & Hungary
The Slovenian government decided to extend border controls on the Croatian and Hungarian borders until November 19, 2023.
Slovenia initially reinstated temporary border controls with Croatia and Hungary on October 21, originally planned for a ten-day period.
The Ministry of Interior of Slovenia has cited the continued need for enhanced security due to elevated terrorist threats as the primary reason for this extension.
Authorities have emphasised their commitment to minimise disruptions to the environment, economy, and the lives of residents in the border region while implementing these measures.
The control measures are enacted in accordance with Article 28 of the Schengen Code and are considered a short-term response to the increased threat of terrorism. The government has notified relevant European institutions, including the European Commission, the European Parliament, the General Secretariat of the Council, and member states.
Slovenian law enforcement agencies have closely monitored potential threats, the overall security situation in both the country and the broader region, and factors contributing to the increase in radicalization and violent extremism.
Travellers who will be entering Slovenia through one of the border crossing points with Croatia and Hungary will be required to present a valid travel document.
Checking document validity before the journey is strongly recommended to avoid any entry refusals at the border.
Slovenia has set up 14 checkpoints on the Croatian and Hungarian borders, 12 on the Croatian border, and 2 on the Hungarian border. EU citizens can use all border crossing points, while third-country nationals can only cross the border at these 14 points.
