Germany Boosts Visa Quotas For Skilled Indian Workers
Germany announced a major expansion of its visa program for skilled Indian professionals during Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to New Delhi, reflecting a deepening partnership between the two countries.
The new commitment aims to increase the annual number of work visas granted to Indian professionals to 90,000 – a significant rise from the current 20,000. This ambitious move also comes with a promise to streamline the visa application process, including faster approval times and easier recognition of Indian qualifications in Germany.
German Chancellor Scholz highlighted Germany’s openness to skilled talent, especially as industries such as healthcare, IT, and engineering experience shortages. “The message is that Germany is open for skilled workers,” Scholz emphasised, noting that the influx of skilled Indian labour has already made a positive impact. Currently, nearly 250,000 Indians reside in Germany, contributing across key sectors such as medicine, nursing, and information technology.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the initiative, underscoring the mutual economic benefits of stronger workforce ties.
“When India's dynamics and Germany's precision come together, a better future is shaped not only for the Indo-Pacific but for the entire world,”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
This agreement builds on a 2022 migration accord between India and Germany that facilitated the mobility of professionals and students, setting the stage for a more streamlined and substantial visa pathway for Indian talent.
High Interest for Germany's ‘Opportunity Card'
Germany’s “Opportunity Card” scheme, introduced in June, has seen a strong response from Indian professionals, who rank as the highest applicant group. The initiative, designed to attract global talent by allowing skilled workers to enter Germany for job-hunting purposes, recorded nearly 2,500 successful applications within just a few months.
The German Interior Ministry reported an average of 550 approved applications each month since the program’s launch, with 780 approvals from India alone, followed by China, Turkey, and Pakistan. This enthusiastic response underscores India’s interest in German opportunities and Germany’s need for qualified professionals in a highly competitive labour market.
With these latest commitments, Germany and India are not only opening new pathways for skilled workers but also strengthening their economic and diplomatic ties – a promising development for both nations and the wider global economy.
