Norway Seen As The Most Sustainable Tourism Destination

Norway and Costa Rica are seen as the most sustainable and responsible tourism destinations in the world, according to the latest survey from the World Travel Market (WTM) London Industry Report 2022. The report surveyed travel industry decision-makers on which destination they perceived as a model for sustainability and responsibility, with 15% choosing Norway and 14% choosing Costa Rica.

Norway, a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, incorporates sustainability into everyday life, with hydropower as its primary source of energy and a sustainable transport network. The country also has lower speed limits than many other European countries and encourages visitors to adopt sustainable practices during their stay. The capital, Oslo, is two-thirds wood and water and was named the European Green Capital of 2019.

Costa Rica, a popular destination for travellers seeking wellness, health, relaxation, adventure, and connection with nature, has also become a leader in ecotourism. The country is home to over 6% of the planet's biodiversity and has established national parks, wildlife reserves, and conservation projects to promote sustainability.

Costa Rica, which recently opened it’s Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa, undoubtedly is one of the places to visit as well as having post study work options, has made a number of strides to enter this list of sustainable destinations.

According to WTM London Exhibition Director Juliette Losardo, “more people are looking for sustainable travel options and countries such as Norway and Costa Rica are shining a light on what is possible and making it easier for people to travel in a sustainable way.”

According to Statistics Norway, in September 2022, the country’s accommodation facilities registered around 31 million guests overnight stays, representing an increase of 21% compared to September 2021.

Also making the top-10 list are:

  • Maldives (13%)
  • New Zealand (12%)
  • Finland (11%)
  • Iceland (9%)
  • Bhutan (6%)
  • Slovenia (4%)
