Schengen Visa Fees Set To Increase In June 2024
Planning a short trip to Europe this summer? Be prepared for a bump in your travel expenses.
Starting June 11, 2024, the European Commission will implement a 12% rise in Schengen visa fees for all applicants.
The new fee will see the cost for adult applicants rise from €80 to €90 and for children aged six to twelve, from €40 to €45. This change aims to offset the rising costs of processing visas and maintaining the security of the Schengen area, according to the European Commission.
“The European Commission adopted a decision to increase short-stay Schengen visa (visa type C) fees worldwide by 12 percent. The increase will apply worldwide as of 11 June 2024,”
“New Schengen visa fees will be 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children aged 6 to below 12 years of age,”
Statement from the Slovenian government.
Why the Increase?
The European Commission justifies the fee hike by citing inflation and the escalating costs associated with administrative processes.
These include background checks, data processing, and maintaining secure entry systems. The last adjustment to the Schengen visa fee was in 2020 when it increased from €60 to €80.
The European Commission said the move aims to align with the increasing costs of processing visas and maintaining the security of the Schengen area.
Schengen visas are required for non-EU citizens whose countries do not have visa waiver agreements with the EU.
Under the EU Visa Code, countries in Schengen can review visa fees every three years.
Timing and Tourism
The fee increase comes at a time when Europe is actively encouraging global tourism. While the hike might seem untimely, the European Commission argues that it is necessary to ensure the continued efficiency and security of the visa processing system.
For travellers planning to visit multiple countries within the Schengen area, this visa is particularly valuable as it allows for seamless travel across borders without the need for multiple visas.
As summer travel plans start to take shape, it's important to factor in these new costs. Despite the increase, the Schengen visa remains a vital tool for enjoying the cultural and historical richness of Europe.
Whether you're planning a summer vacation or a business trip, make sure to adjust your budget to accommodate the new visa fees and enjoy your European adventure!
