Copenhagen Doubles Down on Reward Scheme For Green Tourism

Want to explore Copenhagen and get rewarded for making sustainable choices?
The Danish capital’s popular green initiative, CopenPay, is returning in summer 2025 now super-sized, double the fun, and bursting with extra perks for travellers.
CopenPay is Copenhagen’s innovative “green currency” program that lets tourists earn free experiences simply by making sustainable choices—like riding a bike, picking up litter, or eating plant-based meals. First launched in 2024, it was a hit with travellers and is now returning from 17 June to 17 August 2025 with even more to offer.
This year, the program will span 90 participating attractions, up from just 30 last year. From iconic landmarks like Kronborg Castle and The National Museum to fun adventures with GoBoat and Donkey Republic bike rentals, there’s something for everyone.
Get Rewarded for Travelling Green
Unlike cities that are introducing tourist taxes or entry fees, Copenhagen is flipping the script, rewarding visitors instead of penalising them. Whether you arrive by train, stay longer, or make greener choices during your trip, CopenPay will thank you with special rewards such as:
- Free bike rentals
- Discounted entry to museums and attractions
- Yoga sessions
- Guided city tours
- Free vegetarian meals
Travellers who stay four days or more unlock additional perks, a way to encourage slower, more sustainable tourism.
Why It Matters
Tourism is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions, and Copenhagen wants to lead the change by promoting a regenerative, not just sustainable, travel experience. With 98% of last year’s participants saying they’d recommend the program, it's clear that travellers are eager to make a difference.
The 2024 pilot saw a 29% increase in bike rentals and huge amounts of litter collected by volunteers. Inspired by this success, over 100 tourism boards worldwide have reached out to learn from Copenhagen’s model including destinations like Fiji and Hawaii, which are also piloting eco-friendly tourism programs.
As Søren Tegen Pedersen, CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen, puts it:
“We want visitors to leave not just with memories, but with new habits—biking more, eating greener, and making mindful travel choices wherever they go.”
Wonderful Copenhagen is the official tourism organisation in Copenhagen and organises CopenPay in collaboration with a wide range of local partners, including attractions and the Municipality of Copenhagen.
