Santorini Welcomes Tourists Again as Greece Lifts Safety Restrictions

Greece has officially announced that Santorini is safe and fully prepared to welcome tourists, following a period of seismic activity that impacted the island earlier this year.

The island, along with neighboring Amorgos and Anafi, experienced significant seismic activity from late January to late February, prompting safety concerns and temporary restrictions. However, experts have now confirmed that the earthquake swarm has diminished, and all restrictions have been lifted.

Authorities have conducted extensive inspections of public buildings, verifying their structural integrity and ensuring they are safe for reopening. Enhanced safety protocols implemented during the seismic period will remain in place as a precautionary measure.

Greece’s Reassurance to Travellers

Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni emphasised in an interview with CNN that public safety was the top priority during the crisis. With scientific assessments now indicating no immediate risk, she reassured travelers that Santorini is fully operational and ready for the new season.

“Santorini is open and operating completely as normal. Visitors should feel 100% confident in booking their trips,” she stated. “Now that scientists have given us the green light, residents have returned, and tourism professionals are actively preparing for the season.”

Santorini Welcomes Visitors Once Again

The return of tourists is expected to be robust, with 35 cruise ships scheduled to arrive in April alone. According to the president of the Cruise Association, early bookings for 2025 indicate a 10% increase in cruise and passenger traffic. Last year, 1.3 million tourists visited Santorini as part of their cruise itineraries, contributing to a total of 7.9 million cruise passengers in Greece.

With safety measures in place and tourism infrastructure fully operational, Santorini is set to welcome visitors for another vibrant travel season. Whether arriving by cruise or staying on the island, tourists can once again experience the island’s breathtaking caldera views, world-famous sunsets, and rich history without concern.

For those planning their trips, now is the perfect time to book, as Santorini reopens its doors to travellers worldwide.
