Venice Brings Back Daytripper Fee

If you're planning a quick visit to Venice, be aware that a day trip could now cost you €10, and skipping the fee could lead to a fine of up to €300.
The city has relaunched its daytripper entry fee, doubling it for last-minute visitors. The goal? To reduce overcrowding and protect the historic city from mass tourism.
When and How Does the Fee Apply?
- The €10 fee applies from 18 April to 27 July, every Friday to Sunday, plus public holidays which is a total of 54 days.
- It’s only required during peak hours: 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
- If you book your visit at least four days in advance, you’ll pay just €5.
- Tourists staying overnight in Venice (including areas like Mestre and Marghera) don’t have to pay this fee — they already pay a tourist tax.
Who Doesn’t Have to Pay?
Some people are exempt, including:
- Those working, studying, or getting medical care in Venice
- Venice-born individuals
- Residents of the Veneto region
- Visitors to nearby islands like Murano, known for glass-making
If you enter Venice without paying or showing proof of exemption, you could be fined:
- Between €50 and €300
- Plus the €10 maximum entry fee
Why Did Venice Introduce This Fee?
Venice has struggled with too many tourists, especially daytrippers. Officials say earlier estimates of 25–30 million visitors a year were likely too high. In 2023, 4.6 million people stayed overnight, 16% fewer than before the pandemic.
The entry fee is part of a larger plan to:
- Reduce overcrowding during peak times
- Encourage longer visits
- Improve life for local residents
UNESCO praised the move and decided not to add Venice to its list of endangered World Heritage Sites, something the city had narrowly avoided before by banning cruise ships from its central canals.
Activists have warned that the number of tourist beds now outnumbers local residents, which has dropped to under 50,000. This imbalance is making life harder for Venetians and pushing many to move away.
