Travel Alert: Earthquakes Hit Greek Islands
British holidaymakers heading to Greece are being urged to stay vigilant after a series of earthquakes struck the islands of Santorini and Amorgos, prompting safety measures from local authorities.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated guidance following alerts from Greece’s Ministry of Civil Protection. Officials have advised residents and visitors to steer clear of the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfos, and Fira’s main harbor, which accommodates cruise ships. Additionally, hotels have been directed to drain their swimming pools to minimize the risk of structural damage in the event of a more powerful earthquake.
The warnings follow multiple tremors recorded between Santorini and Amorgos over the weekend, with the Athens Geodynamic Institute detecting earthquakes ranging from 2.8 to 4.5 in magnitude. So far, no damage or injuries have been reported, though minor rockslides have been observed. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
While earthquakes are common in Greece, Santorini's position along the Hellenic Volcanic Arc—a region with a long history of seismic and volcanic activity—has made the recent increase in tremors especially concerning for residents and tourists alike.
FCDO Travel Advice to British Holidaymakers
If you are currently in Santorini or Amorgos, or have upcoming travel plans, the FCDO recommends the following:
- Stay informed by following updates from local authorities and the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection.
- Check with your airline or tour operator for any potential flight cancellations or delays.
- Follow all safety instructions issued by local officials and avoid at-risk areas.
The FCDO also reminded travellers that while there is no immediate cause for alarm, preparedness is key when visiting earthquake-prone regions. For further information or assistance, travellers should consult the FCDO’s official travel advice website or contact their airline.
