UK Travel Warning: Greece Braces for Nationwide Protests and Strikes

The UK government has issued updated travel advice for tourists in Greece due to expected major disruptions on Friday, February 28.

Mass demonstrations are set to take place across Athens and other parts of the country to mark the second anniversary of the Tempi rail disaster.

The 2023 crash, involving a freight and passenger train, claimed 57 lives and left 85 injured, many of them students returning from a holiday. Protesters continue to blame the tragedy on years of neglect in Greece’s rail system following a prolonged financial crisis. A judicial investigation remains ongoing, with recent audio recordings fueling fresh outrage over the cause of death for many victims.

Widespread travel disruptions are anticipated, with nationwide strikes affecting public transport, ferries, trains, and air traffic controllers. The Foreign Office has warned of potential flight cancellations and delays for both domestic and international routes, while public services including hospitals may operate on a limited basis, handling only emergency cases.

“All public transport will face serious disruptions and suspension to services. Ferries, nationwide trains and air traffic controllers will conduct a 24-hour strike.

Expect flight cancellations and delays for national and international flights to and from all airports in Greece.

Public services, including hospitals, will face widespread disruptions and may only deal with emergency cases.”

Additionally, the Greek islands of Santorini, Anafi, Ios, and Amorgos remain under alert due to ongoing seismic activity, with authorities advising residents and visitors to avoid large indoor gatherings.

Travellers heading to Greece around the strike date should stay updated and consider alternative plans. The UK Foreign Office advises British nationals to check the FCDO website for guidance on staying safe during demonstrations.
