US Travellers to be Banned from Europe Travel
The European Union on 27 August moved to reinstate COVID travel restrictions such as quarantine and testing requirements for unvaccinated citizens of the United States as the United States is set to be removed from the “safe travel” list.
It has been reported that EU countries had started a procedure to remove the United States from a list of countries whose citizens can travel to the 27-nation bloc without the need for additional COVID restrictions.
The safelist currently has 23 countries on it, including Japan, Qatar and Ukraine, but some of the 27 EU countries like Germany already have their own limits on US travellers in place.
Reportedly, the other countries that would be removed from the safe travel list were Kosovo, Israel, Montenegro, Lebanon and North Macedonia.
Pending Changes to Travel to the EU
Reportedly, the decision on new EU travel restrictions for foreign nationals would become final on 30 August should no EU country object.
The list is compiled on the basis of the COVID-19 situation in each country, as well as reciprocity. Per EU guidelines, in countries on the safe list, whose citizens can visit for non-essential travel, the number of COVID cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days must not be above the limit of 75.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the US had 507 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the first two weeks of August.
Another point for consideration is that the United States does not allow European citizens to visit freely despite numerous calls to open borders. The bloc has been divided between those pushing for equal treatment and those more reliant on tourism and reluctant to restrict US travellers.
