ETIAS Rollout: EU to Allow Entry Without Travel Authorisation for First Six Months

The EU Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs has confirmed that the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be introduced in phases, starting with a six-month transitional period.

During this time, travellers should apply for ETIAS but will still be allowed entry without it, as long as they meet other entry requirements.

ETIAS aims to strengthen security measures across Europe, requiring people from visa-exempt countries to apply before traveling. The ETIAS is not a visa but an additional layer of security.

Once the transitional phase ends, a grace period will follow, during which ETIAS will be mandatory for entry. However, first-time travellers entering the EU during this grace period will be exempt from this requirement—provided they meet all other conditions. All other travelers without ETIAS will be denied entry. The grace period will last at least six months.

The EU also reminded travellers that ETIAS will take effect several months after the Entry/Exit System (EES) is implemented. With EES still awaiting a confirmed launch date, ETIAS is now expected by late 2025 or 2026.

Once enforced, ETIAS will be required for visa-exempt travellers to the EU. Applications can be submitted via the official ETIAS website or mobile app, with a fee of €7 and a validity of three years.
