EU to Re-Introduce Restrictions for US Tourists
A month after the EU added the United States on its green list, allowing unrestricted travel from the US regardless of vaccination status, the EU is now reportedly considering reimposing Covid restrictions.
With COVID-19 cases having increased dramatically since June, the European Union is expected to discuss restoring travel sanctions on the US as it battles with the emergence of new strains of the virus.
The EU limit for foreign visitors is no more than 75 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the previous 14 days. The US has broken the threshold to be included among non-EU countries that enjoy unrestricted travel into the bloc.
The restrictions would apply to non-essential travel. However, fully vaccinated people should still be able to enter EU countries.
EU and US Travel Negotiations
After the US's epidemiological situation met the EU criteria, the EU had lifted restrictions on US travellers in June. As a result, travel to Europe surged to the point European aviation is nearly at 70% of pre-pandemic levels.
The EU has asked the United States to allow travel from Europe and end the ban, but nothing has happened. However, it has been reported that the US is devising a plan to allow fully vaccinated travellers to enter the US.
If the EU does reimpose mandatory vaccination on US travellers, it shouldn’t change the status quo too much. Many countries already require proof of vaccination anyway. Additionally, some nations continue to introduce vaccine passports inside to enter public establishments such as France and Italy.
