France Extends Schengen Border Checks Until April 2027: What Travellers Should Know

Travelling to France or moving between Schengen countries? France has extended its temporary internal border controls until 30 April 2027. While the Schengen area is designed to make travel between participating countries easier, temporary border checks can affect how travellers experience cross-border journeys.

Here is what the European Commission’s latest notification confirms, and what travellers should understand before planning their next trip.

What has France announced?

According to the European Commission, France has scheduled temporary internal border controls from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027.

The notification cites continued serious threats to public order and internal security as the reasons for the measure. These include security concerns, criminal networks facilitating irregular migration and smuggling, and potential infiltration by radicalised individuals.

This is a temporary border-control measure under the Schengen Borders Code, rather than an announcement of new visa requirements.

Which borders are affected?

France’s notification identifies its internal borders with:

The controls concern internal borders by land, air and sea.

This is particularly relevant for people travelling between France and neighbouring Schengen countries, including those planning multi-country European trips.

Does this mean Schengen travel is changing?

Not necessarily in the way some travellers might expect.

The Schengen area generally allows movement between participating countries without routine internal border checks. However, the European Commission confirms that Member States can temporarily reintroduce checks as a measure of last resort when serious threats to public policy or internal security arise.

France’s announcement does not, by itself, establish new visa requirements or changes to individual entry eligibility.

What should travellers do?

Travellers should review their planned routes, allow time for possible checks and ensure they have the relevant travel documents available.

The notification does not specify individual checking procedures, waiting times or additional documentation requirements. These details should not be assumed.

For anyone planning travel involving France or other Schengen countries, understanding the distinction between temporary border checks and visa requirements is important.
