The German Missions in the United Kingdom have updated their consular districts, affecting where UK residents can apply for a German Schengen visa.
As of February 1, 2025, the German Consulate in Edinburgh will only process Schengen visa applications for residents of Scotland. This includes both UK nationals and foreign residents holding a residence permit or a short-term study visa in Scotland.
This means that only applicants residing in Scotland will be able to have their visa applications processed in Edinburgh.
What This Means for Applicants Outside Scotland
Residents of Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, and Tyne and Wear can no longer apply at the Edinburgh Consulate. Instead, they must submit their visa applications to:
- The German Embassy in London
- Schengen Visa application centres in Manchester or London
You must book an online appointment before submitting your visa application.
Other Consular Services
While the German Honorary Consul in Newcastle-upon-Tyne will still assist with passport matters and document certifications, all other consular services for affected regions must now be handled by the German Embassy in London.
This adjustment streamlines visa services but may require some applicants to travel further to complete their applications.
