Greek Passports To Be Valid For 10 Years

The validity of new Greek passports doubled from five to 10 years for all citizens aged 14 and above.

The relevant legislation was voted through Parliament in July and went into effect on 1 September 2022, the Citizens’ Protection Ministry stated. It has also been clarified that passport application fees will not change. Currently, a Greek passport costs 84.40 euros.

According to the Ministry, with the new validity, Greek passports are now in line with international passport validity standards.

“This is an arrangement that, among other things, and without changing the required fixed stamp fees for citizens, is part of the Ministry’s wider planning to reduce bureaucracy, save additional uniformed personnel from processing cases, in order to be allocated to citizens’ security services, the upgrading of the services provided and the reduction, in general, of unnecessary expenses and working hours,”

The move is expected to save at least 55.5 million euros in state funding and bring the country in line with international practices. It will also reduce bureaucracy and free more police officers for other duties.

It also assures Greek citizens that it is taking all the necessary measures in order to issue high-standard security documents in time and fully compatible with European and international regulations.

Greece lost one place on the Henley Passport Index, released during the summer of 2022, but still has one of the strongest passports in the world ranking eighth.

Greek passport holders have visa-free access to 185 countries including the US, and the UK.
