Highest Ranked European Universities For 2023

According to the 19th annual edition of The Times Higher Education ranking, 36 of the Global Top 100 universities will be in Europe.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is a popular listing published annually, which in 2023 includes 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions.

The Times Higher Education ranking has become a barometer of the shifts in the global innovation and knowledge economy, supporting governments' policymaking and university leaders’ strategic decisions, as well as supporting millions of internationally-mobile students to decide on who to trust with their education.

The list is prepared based on 13 indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

Being in the Global Top 10 is very prestigious for leading universities and apart from three British universities, namely the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London (ICL), only ETH Zurich of Switzerland has ranked in the Top 10 in the last 13 years.

Top European Universities

On the most recent list, 15 European universities ranked among the world’s Top 50 institutions, and 36 were in the Top 100.

The UK's University of Oxford was named the world’s top university for the seventh consecutive year in 2023. It is a university renowned for its international knowledge sharing.

The University of Cambridge was also in the Global Top 10 for 13 years, whereas Imperial College London (ICL) managed to remain on the list for 11 years.
