Paris Airports Brace for Strikes Just Before Olympics Starts

Paris airport workers are planning to go on strike just before the Olympics, which could cause major disruptions for visitors and athletes. This dispute between airport staff and management is a serious issue, especially after years of preparation and millions of investment for the event.

The strike is set for July 17, only nine days before the Olympics' opening ceremony. Major trade unions have announced their plans to strike during this critical time.

The unions are upset about bonuses being given to only a few individuals. They believe all staff at Aéroports de Paris (ADP), the company managing Charles De Gaulle (CDG) and Paris-Orly (ORY) airports, should receive an Olympics bonus.

In May, airport workers in Paris went on strike over similar issues, but the disruptions were minor. This time, the impact could be much greater, with 350,000 people expected to travel through Charles De Gaulle and Orly airports each day during the Olympics.

Thousands of athletes will start arriving on July 18, and a temporary baggage terminal at Charles De Gaulle will handle their equipment, like bikes and kayaks. The unions argue that workers deserve extra pay for working during the busy Olympic period, which falls during France’s traditional summer holiday.

Along with train stations, Charles de Gaulle and Orly are set to be the main gateways into France for foreign Olympics fans, as well as athletes and equipment.

Fewer Tourists Expected

Despite the influx of Olympic spectators, Air France-KLM has warned of poor financial results due to fewer recreational visitors to Paris during the games.

With bigger crowds, higher prices, and the general chaos of the Olympics, tourists seem to be avoiding Paris.

International travel to France is expected to stabilise after the Olympics, with strong demand predicted for late August and September.

The Olympics are set to showcase Paris on the world stage, and despite the immediate hurdles, the event will likely reinforce the city's status as a premier global destination. Paris is preparing to welcome the world, and the legacy of the games will shape its future for years to come.
