Belgium Travel Alert: UK Foreign Office Issues New Guidance for Tourists

UK travellers planning a trip to Belgium are being urged to stay cautious following an important travel update from the UK Foreign Office.

Belgium, a favourite destination for city breaks, especially in the colder months thanks to its enchanting Christmas markets, is now flagged for potential risks related to terrorism, strikes, and demonstrations.

In the latest travel advice, the Foreign Office highlights that terrorists are “likely” to attempt attacks in Belgium, specifically targeting locations frequented by foreigners. These could include public transportation, cultural and sporting events, government buildings, and religious sites.

Brussels, Ghent, and Bruges are must-visit destinations during the festive season.

The Belgian government has raised the national threat level to 3, indicating a “serious” risk, with increased police presence and heightened security measures across the country. Tourists are urged to stay alert, be mindful of their surroundings, and adhere to guidance from local authorities.

Beyond terrorism, the update also underscores the potential for disruption caused by demonstrations and strikes, particularly in Brussels' EU quarter and major transportation hubs. Although most protests are peaceful, there is still a chance of unrest, especially following major sporting events. Strikes, which can severely impact both local and international travel, may be announced or extended with little notice, causing delays and disruptions.

The Foreign Office advises tourists to avoid protests altogether and to remain vigilant in areas where large crowds are gathering.

Travellers should stay informed by checking local news updates and keeping in touch with their travel providers. In case of any signs of disorder, it's recommended to leave the area swiftly, expect delays on major roads, and continue to follow the advice of local authorities.
