German Union Calls for Transport Strike on 27 March
German trade unions announced a major transport strike for Monday in a growing dispute over pay and working conditions.
Significant disruptions to trains, flights, and local transit are expected on 27 March 2023.
Staff at major airports and hundreds of transport workers across Germany will stop work for 24 hours, according to a joint statement by the trade unions ver.di and rail union EVG.
The union, which represents around 2.5 million public sector workers, is demanding a 10.5% and no less than €500 pay rise amid soaring inflation and the cost-of-living crisis.
The strikes are expected to cause serious disruptions at the country’s major airports. Most of the regional and intercity train services will be cancelled. Bus, tram, and metro drivers will also stop work in several federal states, according to the union.

Warning of Travel Disruption At Airports
Frankfurt Airport said it won’t be able to provide regular service on March 27 as workers stage a one-day strike
The airport issued a warning over the day's “huge disruption” of air traffic, adding that “all tasks that enable full flight operations are suspended due to the strike”.
Passengers, including those changing at Frankfurt airport, should avoid travel to the hub on Monday.
Hamburg Airport has also advised that Ver.di is calling for a 24-hour warning strike from 26 March from 10:00 PM to 27 March 11:00 PM.
Passengers are asked to find out about their current flight status. In the event of cancellations/rebookings, affected passengers should contact their airline.
Germany is not the only country to have been affected by a slew of strikes. In the UK, hundreds of thousands of people have recently staged a walkout to demand higher wages to meet rising living costs. France has also seen more than a million demonstrators march in cities and towns against the government's plan to raise the retirement age to 64.
