Germany is placing restrictions on travel from the UK to curb the spread of the Omicron variant.

From 20th December, there will be a travel ban from the UK to Germany, except for German nationals, residents and transit passengers.

Everyone entering Germany from the UK, whether vaccinated or not, will need a negative PCR test and is required to quarantine for 14 days.

The Robert-Koch-Institut, Germany’s public health authority, announced the new rules yesterday evening as it classified the UK as an area of variants of concern due to Omicron.

The UK’s addition to Germany’s travel ban for countries with the widespread occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 virus variants of concern means that they join the following countries:

  • Andorra
  • Denmark – including the Faroe Islands and Greenland
  • France – including the overseas department Réunion
  • Lebanon
  • Norway, and
  • United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland incl. all British Overseas Territories, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands

Other countries in Germany’s highest risk category include South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

There are more countries that have been on this list since the beginning of the year. It said that Germany bans UK travellers and the UK’s restrictions could last until at least 3 January 2022.

Spain, Netherlands & Italy: Will fellow EU nations ban Brits in wake of Germany & France's clampdown?

SPAIN, the Netherlands and Italy are all tackling the spread of Omicron. With cases rising rapidly in the UK, will fellow EU nations follow suit as Germany bans UK travellers?

Spain

Spain has not yet made any statements about banning UK travellers from the country.

Spain is currently only allowing fully vaccinated UK travellers to enter the country unless travelling for “essential” purposes.

Italy

Italy has increased its travel restrictions but has not yet banned Britons from travelling to the country.

Italy is currently allowing fully vaccinated arrivals from the UK to enter without quarantine, but they must also show evidence of a negative Covid test.

Unvaccinated arrivals must also show evidence of a negative Covid test and self-isolate for five days.

Netherlands

The Netherlands will also go into a new lockdown from this morning to try to limit Covid-19 infections because of the Omicron variant. All non-essential shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas, museums and theatres must shut from Sunday until January 14, while schools must close until at least January 9.

Germany is the latest country to ban travel to and from the UK but the Netherlands too has not yet confirmed that it will place travel restrictions on the UK.
