Germany Extends Border Checks
Germany is extending temporary border checks beyond March 15, 2025, with controls expected to remain in place until at least June 2025, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced on January 30.
While border-free travel is a key feature of the Schengen Area, Germany argues that these checks are necessary due to ongoing security concerns and migration challenges. Faeser emphasised that controls will continue “until external border protection really takes effect.”
Although Schengen rules generally prohibit internal border checks, exceptions can be made for security reasons. If you're planning to visit Germany from neighboring countries such as Poland, Austria, France, or the Czech Republic, be prepared for possible longer wait times at crossings.
Here’s what travellers need to keep in mind:
✅ Carry Your Passport or ID – Border guards may request identification, even for EU citizens.
✅ Expect Possible Delays – Random checks could slow down road and rail travel.
✅ Watch Your Schengen Days – If you're a visa-exempt traveler, remember the 90-day limit within a 180-day period.
Germany’s Commitment to Schengen
Speaking in Warsaw, Faeser reassured European neighbours that Germany remains committed to Schengen's open-border principles, stating, “At some point, we want the Schengen Area to have open borders again.” However, recent political developments, including Germany's move to tighten asylum policies, have fueled debates across the EU.
For now, travellers should plan ahead, ensure they have the proper documentation, and stay updated on border control measures.
