India Has Strike Deals To Get Working Holiday Visas For Young Indian

Exciting news for Indians who are looking for a travel opportunity and a chance to immerse themselves in a culture different from their own while young.

The Indian government has been striking trade deals with economic powerhouses that includes provisions for cultural exchange under a working holiday scheme.

The Working Holiday Scheme is an incredible opportunity to legally work and travel abroad. The “working holiday visa” is a visa targeted toward young travellers, often between the ages of 18-30 years old and offered by more than 50 countries worldwide with the purpose of incentivising youth mobility.

The visa is usually valid for 1-2 years.

Here are the countries where young Indians can expect to have reserved places for youth mobility.

United Kingdom

2 Year Visa

The United Kingdom and India recently signed a new migration partnership, which plans to introduce a new visa scheme for British and Indian young professionals.

Under the UK-India Young Professional Scheme, the UK has promised to annually provide 3,000 visas to degree-holding nationals, between the age group of 18-30 years. The selected individuals will be able to stay and work in the Kingdom for up to 2 years.

Although the UK's first ballot for the 2023 Youth Mobility scheme has opened, it did not include the slots for Indian nationals as the schemes are currently separate from one another. According to Indian High Commission, the implementation date, checklist for eligibility and the step-by-step process will be shared shortly. It is expected that the first ballot for the UK-India Young Professional Scheme will open in February 2023.

Australia

1-year visa

Under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, Australia has agreed to extend access to the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa to up to 1,000 Indian citizens each year.

Applications are not yet open, but the Australian government says that Indians will be able to apply for Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visas within two years from the implementation of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement.

The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) will come into force on 29 December 2022.

Germany

Nationals of India will soon be subject to less strict rules when reaching Germany for professional, study, and work purposes as the two countries have signed the German-Indian Migration Agreement on 05 December 2022.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser stated that “The German-Indian Migration and Mobility Agreement is a milestone for an intensified German-Indian partnership in the area of migration. We are setting the course for qualified young Indians to gain professional and practical experience in Germany, to study here, start vocational training, or work in their profession. This is another important step in attracting skilled workers that we urgently need in the German labour market.”

Now that the agreement has been signed, a joint working group will be set up for the implementation, and the new migration and mobility rules set out in the new agreement apply to citizens of both countries wishing to take up work in Germany and India.

India is pushing for more working holiday visa routes for its nationals. The list will continue to grow. Travelling as a young person can be a great way to experience new cultures and expand your professional horizons. It allows you to thrive and connect with your family, and friends and expand your networks that later become your tribe.
