Spain to End Its Golden Visa Program: A Final Opportunity for Investors
Spain’s Golden Visa Program which allowed non-EU citizens to obtain Spanish residency through large financial investments is set to end soon.
The Spanish government has announced that applications for the program will only be accepted until April 3, 2025. For wealthy investors, this represents a last chance to take advantage of Spain’s Golden Visa Program before it officially ends. Successful applicants, along with their families, have enjoyed visa-free travel within the Schengen Area, as well as the right to live, work, and study in Spain.
The Golden Visa has come under growing scrutiny in recent years, particularly for its role in driving up housing prices. Wealthy investors have been buying properties to meet residency requirements, intensifying concerns amid Spain’s escalating political debates over housing affordability.
The program’s termination was confirmed with the publication of Organic Law 1/2025 in Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE) on January 3, 2025, following approval by the Spanish Congress of Deputies in December 2024.
Final Call For Investors To Spain
For those still interested, there’s a small window of opportunity to act. Non-EU nationals can apply for residency under the Golden Visa Program until April 3, 2025.
Applicants must meet one of the following investment criteria:
- Purchase a property worth €500,000 or more.
- Invest €1 million in Spanish financial institutions, including shares, bank deposits, or investment funds.
- Hold €2 million in Spanish government bonds.
In 2024 alone, Spain granted 780 Golden Visas, with an average investment of €657,204 per applicant, highlighting the program’s popularity among global investors.
Spain's residence-by-investment scheme provides one of the quickest paths to residency. Successful applicants and their immediate family members may acquire temporary residence permits in less than a month. Over time, investors can qualify for permanent residency after five years and can apply for Spanish citizenship after a decade of continuous residence.
With its April 2025 deadline looming, Spain’s Golden Visa Program is in its final chapter. For aspiring investors dreaming of Spanish residency, this is a “last call” to secure the benefits of this renowned program. Whether you’re drawn to Spain’s vibrant culture, world-class healthcare, or access to the broader EU, the clock is ticking for this golden opportunity.
