UK Launches Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) System for Qatari Travellers
The UK government has committed to completing the digitisation of its borders by 2025.
The UK has launched the ETA system, an electronic travel authorisation system meant to ease the admission process for visa-free travellers from diverse countries.
The implementation of this system will take place in stages, with different nationalities targeted.
The system is now open for visitors from the Middle East, starting with those travelling from Qatar who are planning to visit the UK from November 15, 2023.
Other nationalities do not need to apply yet, but from February 1, 2024, the scheme will be introduced for nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.
Additionally, an ETA will be required if a traveller is transiting through the UK, but not going through the UK border control.
In the future, the scheme will also be implemented worldwide for visitors to the UK who do not currently need a visa for short stays, including European nationals.
An ETA costs £10, and permits multiple journeys. It is valid for two years, or until the holder’s passport expires – whichever is sooner.
The easiest way to apply for an ETA is through the UK ETA app, or via the GOV.UK website. The applicant will receive an email confirmation after around three days and the ETA will be linked electronically to their passport.
ETA requirements will not apply to Irish nationals nor will they apply to non-Irish nationals lawfully residing in Ireland who are travelling to the United Kingdom from elsewhere in the Common Travel Area.
Foreign nationals who have, or require, a visa (or equivalent permission) for entry into the United Kingdom will not be subject to ETA requirements.
