UK Foreign Office Issues Heatwave Travel Warnings

Planning a summer getaway to Europe? The UK Foreign Office has a crucial message for you.

Millions of British holidaymakers flock to Europe every summer, and this year is no exception. Spain, Italy, and Greece continue to top the list of summer holiday destinations. Why? They offer exactly what most Europeans crave: sun-soaked, beach-filled getaways.

But before you pack your bags, there’s an urgent heatwave warning to consider. Popular summer hotspots across the continent are experiencing intense heatwaves, making it more important than ever to stay informed and prepared.

Europe's weather this July is like night and day. While the north is cooler and wetter than usual, the south is sizzling under relentless heat.

Italy, Greece, and Spain are the hardest hit, with temperatures soaring above 30°C and wildfires becoming a serious threat.

Destination Breakdown

Spain is expected to face the brunt of the heat, with cities like Seville, Malaga, and Valencia predicted to hit peak temperatures on July 11 and July 12.

Italy's health ministry has issued a red alert heatwave warning for seven Italian cities on 11 July, with high temperatures set to last for 10 days.

The cities included in the level-three weather warning are Campobasso, Frosinone, Latina, Perugia, Turin, Rieti, Rome and Trieste.

The peak of the heatwave is expected by 13 July, according to ilMeteo.it, with Sardinia and Sicily set for the highest temperatures with peaks of 42-43°C and up to 38-39°C in the south and central areas of Italy.

Greece suffers from devastating wildfires every summer. The highest temperatures are expected in Thessaloniki at 45°C while most cities are at around 42-43°C.

The Greek Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, has put the recent heatwave in the southern European hotspot down to the climate crisis.

Portugal and Turkey have also been hit by skyrocketing temperatures and stifling heat.

Stay Safe: Follow the Advice

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is urging travellers to stay informed by checking for the latest updates. The extreme heat can bring health risks and the potential for wildfires, particularly in countries like Greece, where wildfires have already impacted Crete, Kos, and Chios.

FCDO Recommendations:

  • Health Precautions: Follow the NHS guidelines on coping with hot weather. Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during peak heat, and look for shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  • Wildfire Awareness: Stay alert to the risk of wildfires, especially when travelling in or near forested areas. Report any signs of fire to local authorities immediately and adhere to all safety instructions.

Importance of Travel Insurance

In the midst of a heatwave, having comprehensive travel insurance is more crucial than ever.

Here’s why:

  • Medical Emergencies: Extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and other health issues. Travel insurance can cover medical expenses if you need treatment.
  • Trip Cancellations: If wildfires or severe weather disrupt your plans, travel insurance can help cover the costs of cancellations or rescheduling.
  • Lost or Delayed Baggage: With the high volume of travellers, baggage delays and losses are more common. Travel insurance can provide compensation and support in such cases.
  • Emergency Assistance: In case of an emergency, having travel insurance ensures you have access to 24/7 assistance for medical, legal, and travel-related issues.

So, if you’re heading to Europe, enjoy the sun, but don’t forget to play it safe. Check the FCDO website for updates, and keep an eye on local weather reports.
