Caution Advised for British Visitors to Paris as Threat at ‘Highest Level’
France is a beautiful country that is easily accessible from the United Kingdom. However, before going on your journey, it is critical to be aware of any potential health and safety issues.
France has recently elevated its national terrorist threat level to the highest category. This decision has prompted heightened security measures throughout the country, spanning schools, places of worship, shopping centres, and iconic landmarks.
In response to this development, the UK Foreign Office has updated its travel guidance for those heading to France, particularly in light of recent incidents involving airport evacuations and bomb threats at cultural treasures like the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre.
It's important to note that British authorities are not discouraging travel to Paris, but rather emphasising the need for heightened vigilance among travellers.
The official advice is as follows:
“There is a significant global terrorist threat affecting UK interests and British nationals, which includes potential risks from groups and individuals who may target the UK and its citizens.”
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) urges visitors to “stay alert, anticipate enhanced security checks, and adhere to the guidance provided by local authorities.”
Travelling Beyond Paris
While it's expected that tighter security measures will be in place in bustling urban centers like Paris, it's essential to exercise extra caution throughout France as well.
There is no specific guidance that advises against travelling to other areas of France. As in Paris, visitors to other regions are urged to remain vigilant and be prepared to follow the instructions of local authorities if any incidents occur.
British travellers to France can enter the country visa-free for up to 90 days whether you're visiting for tourism or business purposes. Border officials may inquire about your intended accommodation and onward travel plans, so make sure to have this information readily available.
