Portugal’s New Digital Nomad Visa
Portugal has recently announced that it will be launching a new digital nomad visa on 30 October 2022.
Portugal’s new digital nomad visa will allow remote workers and digital nomads to live and work in Portugal for up to one year or apply for residency to stay longer.
The highly-anticipated “digital nomad visa,” allows remote workers who make four times the national minimum wage to live and work in Portugal.
One of the program's biggest selling points is that recipients are able to travel visa-free throughout the Schengen Area, a region containing 26 European Union member countries where travellers can move freely without dealing with border control.

What You Need To Know Of The New Visa
The new visa which is officially called the “residence visa for the exercise of professional activity provided remotely outside the national territory” is designed for working professionals. It aims to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and aid recovery from the pandemic.
It’s an alternative to the existing ‘D7’ visa which is a popular residency permit mostly aimed at retirees and ‘passive income’ earners.
Those looking for a European country to enjoy while continuing to work remotely have long favoured Portugal.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Come from a country, not in the EU or EEA
- Be self-employed or employed by a company based outside of Portugal
- Earn at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage per month, roughly €2,800.
D7 visa holders only need to earn the Portuguese minimum wage (€822.50 per month) per month. However, these earnings must come from ‘passive’ income streams like rent or investments.
How To Apply For Portugal's Digital Nomad Visa
Application documentation requirements are relatively straightforward. Applicants need to provide proof of non-EU national residency, proof of income for the last three months, and employment by a non-EU-based company is needed.
Interested applicants can apply at a Portuguese Consulate in their home country, or at Portugal's immigration agency, Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras.
