Spain Will Not Grant Visa Waiver To Kosovo In 2024
Last week, the EU Parliament approved the visa liberalisation of Kosovo citizens to the EU in 2024 but the agreement will not be applied in Spain.
Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stated that Spain will not apply the elimination of short-stay visas for Kosovo citizens, despite the EU support for the exemption of these visas, because Spain does not recognise Kosovo and does not recognise Kosovar passports.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia however not all countries recognise its independence. Its independence is currently not recognised by five EU member states such as Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia, and Spain.
Although Spain does not recognise Kosovo's independence, Spain did not object to the new visa regime for Kosovo with the rest of the EU countries.

Impact on Travel To Spain
Kosovo has been working to establish itself as a recognised state and gain membership in international organisations such as the EU.
Maintaining the visa requirements for citizens of Kosovo to Spain despite the EU agreement has significant travel and economic impact.
Many Kosovo citizens face difficulties obtaining visas, as the process can be time-consuming and expensive. The visa policy poses a hindrance to visiting friends and family, studying, and attending business conferences in the country.
The visa requirement also limits the opportunities for Kosovo citizens to engage in cultural exchange and investment activities with Spain.
