Schiphol Airport’s Flight Cap Overturned

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has emerged victorious in a court case to prevent Amsterdam Schiphol Airport from reducing flights from 500,000 to 440,000 annually to reduce noise pollution.

Though the airline may have only won a one-year reprieve.

Schiphol flight reduction plan was invalidated by the court due to the state's failure to follow proper procedures.

As a result of the ruling, the busy airport in the Netherlands may not reduce flights, as it had hoped to do, for the coming year.

The airport has been working to address both noise issues and CO2 emissions. Reducing the number of flights taking place at the airport was part of that effort. The aim was to find a more equitable balance between the interests of aviation and the environment.

In a show of solidarity, multiple airlines refused to accept the proposed changes and banded together to bring their grievances to the court. The case was brought by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Air Transport Association of America, as well as a long list of airlines. In addition to KLM, other airlines that were a party to the challenge included Delta Airlines, Transavia Airlines, Martinair, TUI Fly (Netherlands), easyJet, Lufthansa, Air Canada, British Airways, JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, and others.

The Dutch business community and citizens have come together in a powerful campaign against the proposed flight restrictions at Schiphol arguing it will simply divert the traffic to other airports, and do little to reduce aviation emissions. Some 84,000 jobs could also be jeopardised if Dutch air travel was weakened.

Meanwhile, Schiphol Airport is planning to get rid of late-night flights within the next couple of years.

The Threat Remains

The Dutch government has decided to reduce the number of flight movements at Schiphol from 500,000 to 440,000 per year.

The government then sought to accelerate the implementation of the reduction by introducing an “experimental regulation” with an interim cap of 460,000 flight movements from 1 November 2023, which IATA and the airlines contested.

Now that the court has thrown out the experimental regulation, there's still a larger reduction to 440,000 movements from November 2024 on the horizon. 

The government ministry responsible for aviation infrastructure said it was studying the ruling and considering its next steps and will make sure their proposal can stand up in court next time.

Ponga, a town and municipality in northwest Spain, says it will pay £2,600 (€2,971) to each person who chooses to relocate there and will add another £2,600 for each baby born there.

Travel to South Korea Temporarily Eased for 22 Countries

South Korea has expanded its list of nationalities that can visit the country without having to apply for the Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA).

South Korea has paused its K-ETA requirement for 22 nationalities starting 1 April to boost travel until 31 December 2024.

“Starting from April 1, 2023, South Korea will temporarily extend travel exemptions for citizens of 22 regions under the K-ETA system. This expansion will last until December 31, 2024,” the press release reads.

K-ETA is an online electronic travel authorisation that visa-free foreign visitors must obtain before entering the Republic of Korea for tourism, visiting relatives, participating in events or meetings, and business trips.

Nationals from countries who are not exempt must continue to obtain the K-ETA at least 72 hours prior to departure to South Korea and be approved ahead of travel. The result will be emailed after 24 hours.

Easier Access To South Korea

Citizens from 89 countries must apply for K-ETA before travelling to South Korea and once they have a K-ETA, it is valid for multiple trips for two years.

The K-ETA fee is 10,000KRW (approximately USD9 to 10, additional fee excluded) and is non-refundable, paid by credit card online.

Citizens from the following 22 countries do not need a K-ETA temporarily.

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macau, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK and the US (including Guam).

The travellers still need a valid passport or travel document for entry.

On 3 April, Germany's monthly €49 nationwide public transport ticket went on sale.

Passengers can now pre-purchase the ‘Deutschland-Ticket' or ‘D-Ticket' on Deutsche Bahn's website and app, and from transport companies across Germany. It is available as a digital subscription that can be cancelled monthly.

The initiative is being introduced to help ease the cost of living while making public transport simpler, more affordable, and thus more attractive for commuters.

However, long-distance travel on buses, as well as on trains is not covered by the ticket.

It was originally slated to be available in January but will now come into force in May.

To ensure that your subscription remains active for the upcoming month, it is important to have purchased it before the 20th of the current month. For instance, if you wish to utilise your €49 ticket at the start of May, it is crucial to purchase it before the 20th of April. Conversely, if purchased after the 20th of April, the ticket will only be valid for the following month.

Those who purchase the ticket will be required to prove their identity in the event of checks and the ticket is available for individuals above six years old as those under six can use public transport for free. You will be asked to provide a German address and fill in a European international bank account (IBAN) number.

The German authorities have explained that the €49 ticket cannot be passed from one person to another.

If you're only in Germany for a few days, this deal might not be worth it. But if you're planning on exploring several cities or taking day trips, the ticket can definitely save you some cash.
