Australia Travel Ban Could Be Lifted Earlier Than December
The Australian government extended the travel ban on Australians through December, however, just as the ban is extended with the stroke of a pen, so too can it be lifted.
The ban on Australians leaving the country could be removed as early as November as the federal government pushes ahead with plans to release a “vaccine passport” for travellers keen to travel overseas.
Australia’s borders have been shut since March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and residents seeking to leave the country are required to apply to the government for a travel exemption.
An announcement from the government regarding the adjusted timeline is expected within days.
Australia’s Vaccine Passport
While Australians have been forced to seek permission from the Department of Home Affairs to leave the country during the pandemic, federal ministers want to dismantle the restriction as soon as the vaccination rate reaches 80% of people aged 16 and over.
Officials discussed the easing of the border rules on 8 September as they continue to look towards a travel pass linked to the Australian Immunisation Record that Australians can use abroad.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated that the implementation of home quarantine and apps proving COVID-19 vaccination is what Australia needs “for international travel to work”.
The government, through phase C of the national plan, has indicated Australians will be allowed to travel overseas at 80% double-dose.
The federal government will start issuing international COVID-19 vaccination certificates in October. The vaccine passport will be available either in digital or in paper format.
