Cyprus Remains a Safe Destination This Summer

As tensions escalate in the Middle East following recent military action between Israel and Iran, many British holidaymakers are wondering whether it’s still safe to travel to nearby destinations, especially Cyprus.

The UK Foreign Office has issued strict warnings against travel to Israel, but no such warning is in place for Cyprus, despite its proximity to the conflict zone. However, it urges travellers to stay alert due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

Cyprus, located in the eastern Mediterranean just 472km from Israel, is a long-time favourite for British tourists. Over 1.3 million UK travellers visit the island each year, and approximately 30,000 British citizens live there permanently.

While some concerns have circulated online—such as social media reports of streaks of light in the night sky—there is no verified evidence of missile activity over Cyprus, and authorities have not confirmed any threats to the island.

What Does the UK Government Advise?

According to the latest guidance from the UK Foreign Office, Cyprus remains safe to visit.

However, due to the instability in the wider region, the government advises travellers to:

  • Stay informed by monitoring local and international news
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Remain vigilant, especially in public areas

The official UK Foreign Office travel advice states:

“Ongoing hostilities in the region and between Israel and Iran could escalate quickly and pose security risks for the wider region.”

Can I Cancel My Trip to Cyprus?

Because the Foreign Office has not advised against travel to Cyprus, travellers are unlikely to receive a refund if they cancel their holidays.

Most airlines and travel insurers will not consider the current situation a valid reason to reimburse bookings.

That means choosing not to travel may result in losing part—or even all—of your booking costs.

What About Other Destinations in the Region?

Travellers heading to destinations like Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, and the UAE are also advised to review Foreign Office guidance:

  • Turkey: Avoid all travel within 10km of the Syrian border.
  • Jordan: Be alert to airspace disruptions; follow local authority instructions.
  • UAE & Egypt: No current restrictions, but travellers should stay updated.

While global headlines focus on the unfolding crisis in Israel and Iran, Cyprus remains open and safe for tourists, according to both local officials and the UK government.

If you already have plans to visit, there is no reason to cancel unless new guidance is issued. Just stay informed, register for travel alerts, and enjoy your trip responsibly.

Although Cyprus is a member of the European Union, it is not yet part of the Schengen Area, which permits border-free travel between participating countries. However, Cyprus plans to join the Schengen Zone by 2026, with technical preparations expected to be finalised by the end of 2025.
