UK Issues Travel Warning Over Fire Safety in Croatia

British travellers heading to Croatia this season should be aware: the UK Foreign Office has issued a serious warning due to an increased risk of wildfires, along with the possibility of hefty fines or even jail time if safety rules are ignored.

Croatia’s dry summer climate, combined with dense forests, makes it especially vulnerable to wildfires. The country is stunning, but it’s also a fire hotspot during the warmer months. For visitors, that means extra caution is not just encouraged, it’s required.

The UK government has advised all travellers to stay informed about fire outbreaks and to follow instructions from local authorities. If you find yourself near a fire or in immediate danger, dial 112—Croatia’s emergency number—for quick assistance.

What Could Get You in Trouble?

Starting a fire on purpose is a criminal offense in Croatia and could lead to fines ranging from €2,000 to €20,000 or even a prison sentence, the UK Foreign Office has warned.

Here’s what travellers need to know:

  • Lighting outdoor fires or barbecues is banned from June to October—unless you’re in a designated area.
  • Littering, especially with glass, is a big no-no. Sunlight can reflect through bottles and start fires.
  • Fines for negligence range from €260 to €1,200—even if the fire wasn’t deliberate.
  • Smoking in nature areas? Think twice. Failing to extinguish a cigarette properly could come at a high cost. Fines in these cases have ranged from €260 to €1,200 .

Large Summer Events: What Travellers Should Expect

It’s not just wildfires travellers need to plan for. Croatia’s summer festivals are booming, and with them come massive crowds and safety precautions.

One of the biggest events this year is a concert in Zagreb on July 5, expected to draw up to 500,000 attendees

For tourists in the capital:

  • Expect traffic delays and road closures.
  • Public transport may be diverted or limited.
  • Keep valuables close—crowds can attract pickpockets.
  • Follow directions from police and event staff for your safety.

What Travellers Can Do

To enjoy your Croatian getaway safely and without penalties:

  • Check for local fire warnings before exploring rural or coastal areas.
  • Never leave trash behind, especially glass or flammable items.
  • Use designated smoking and barbecue areas only.
  • Stay up to date on event advisories and traffic alerts if attending public gatherings.

Croatia is a top-tier summer destination, offering everything from cultural festivals to dazzling views. But if you’re heading there soon, don’t let a small mistake ruin your holiday. Follow the rules, respect fire safety laws, and stay alert, especially during wildfire season.

By staying informed and acting responsibly, you’ll be able to enjoy the best of Croatia without any unpleasant surprises.
