Major Protests Expected in European Holiday Destinations on June 15

As Europe heads into another busy summer travel season, activists are planning major anti-tourism protests to spotlight the growing problems caused by overtourism.

Europe’s tourism sector is bracing for disruption as mass anti-tourism protests are set to sweep through major holiday destinations on 15 June 2025. The coordinated demonstrations are expected to affect key tourist hotspots in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and even parts of Northern Europe, including the Netherlands and the UK.

The movement, spearheaded by over 60 activist groups under the banner Southern Europe Network Against Touristification, aims to challenge what protesters call the “tourism monoculture.” Tourists are being advised to expect possible disruptions as activist groups gear up for large-scale protests.

Popular Holiday Destinations at the Centre of the Protests

Travellers heading to the Balearic Islands (including Ibiza, Menorca, and Mallorca), the Canary Islands, Barcelona, Granada, Santander, and other key Spanish destinations could experience disruptions. Demonstrations are also planned in Venice, Lisbon, and Athens—all cities grappling with overtourism and local frustration over rising rents, overcrowding, and resource strain.

In Barcelona, a midday protest is planned at Jardinets de Gràcia, where water pistols will be used symbolically against “touristification.” Local campaigners say the action is meant to challenge policies that place tourism profits above community needs.

Travel Disruption Likely

Authorities in several countries are warning tourists to expect delays and disruptions. Travellers are advised to avoid tourist hotspots on 15 June and to be ready to adjust travel plans at short notice. Demonstrations may affect local transport, city tours, and access to popular landmarks.

While the protests are not targeting tourists personally, the message is clear: locals across Europe are demanding a tourism model that prioritises sustainability and community wellbeing. For the travel industry, these demonstrations serve as a wake-up call—continued growth without consideration for local impact may no longer be tolerated.

Tourism operators, airlines, and accommodation providers are being urged to prepare for cancellations and reputational risks, as these protests highlight a growing resistance to unchecked visitor numbers.
