UK Citizens Advised To Avoid Non-Essential Travel to Israel

British nationals are being strongly advised to avoid all but essential travel to Israel as tensions in the Middle East escalate dangerously.

The UK Foreign Office updated its travel advice following missile strikes between Israel and Iran, warning that the region could rapidly descend into all-out war.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy described the situation as a “moment of grave peril” and called on all parties to exercise restraint. The heightened threat level follows Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, which triggered retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Iran overnight.

As a result, the Foreign Office has flagged a nationwide state of emergency in Israel and highlighted the significant risk to British nationals from missile attacks and rapidly changing security conditions. “The situation could escalate quickly and could pose significant risks, including missile fire,” the travel advisory states.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer convened an emergency Cobra meeting and has been in contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging a diplomatic path forward. Sir Keir also aligned with world leaders including US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in calling for de-escalation and renewed dialogue.

For British travellers already in Israel or the surrounding region, the advice is to remain vigilant, monitor official guidance, and be prepared for sudden changes to flight schedules and access to services. Air travel across the Middle East has already seen disruptions, although Jordan and Lebanon have since reopened their airspace, citing no immediate threat.

The Foreign Office continues to monitor the situation and encourages British nationals to register their presence via the UK government's travel advice website for emergency updates.

With civilian casualties already reported and both Israel and Iran appearing prepared for a prolonged confrontation, UK authorities warn that the conflict could significantly impact travel, safety, and regional stability in the coming days.
