Romania Nearing Visa-Free Travel to the US
Romania is on the brink of an important juncture in its foreign relations, with the possibility of joining the Visa Waiver Programme with the United States.
Recent negotiations and assurances from both the Romanian and US ambassadors indicate that Romanians may be able to travel to the US visa-free as early as 2025.
According to Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Romania joining the visa waiver program by 2025 is an “achievable goal” as it is close to the coveted 3% rejected visa applications that will allow inclusion in the Visa Waiver program.
Last year, the rejection rate for Romanian visa applications to the USA stood at 17%.
This determination was reaffirmed by Ambassador Andrei Muraru, who stated with certainty that Romania will “certainly” join the Visa Waiver program by 2025, expecting an official announcement around February 2025 and implementation within the same year.
The move to join the Visa Waiver program signifies a shift in Romania's global connectivity and bilateral relationships.
Legislation plays a pivotal role in this journey, as highlighted by the “Romania Visa Waiver Act of 2023,” presented to the US Senate. This bill urges Romania to intensify efforts against human trafficking and meet technical criteria for Visa Waiver participation, emphasising the responsibilities Romania must shoulder to ensure compliance with international standards.
